YACHT BROKER CATAMARAN SURVEY ALAMITOS BAY, LONG BEACH

This is a quick excerpt of survey day on this custom built 50′ aluminum hull catamaran ocean research vessel. This amazing vessel has traveled around the world six times doing amazing oceanic research. This day we were lucky enough to take part in lowering the mast to get under a bridge. There wasn’t much wind for sailing, but we still raised the mainsail and enjoyed a slow and peaceful sailing experience. All seemed to go well with the surveys. Check back because we plan on doing a much longer version of survey day on another video.

A marine survey is a comprehensive inspection and assessment of a vessel’s condition, typically conducted by a qualified marine surveyor. The primary purpose of a marine survey is to provide an objective evaluation of a boat or yacht’s structure, systems, and overall seaworthiness. Marine surveys are commonly requested when buying or selling a boat, obtaining insurance, securing financing, or for routine maintenance and safety checks.

Here are the key aspects and types of marine surveys:

  1. Pre-Purchase Survey: This is the most common type of marine survey and is typically requested by potential buyers. The surveyor thoroughly inspects the vessel, both above and below the waterline, to assess its overall condition, structural integrity, mechanical systems, electrical systems, and safety equipment. The surveyor provides a detailed report with findings and recommendations, helping the buyer make an informed decision.
  2. Condition and Valuation (C&V) Survey: This type of survey is often required by insurance companies or financial institutions when a boat owner is seeking insurance coverage or financing. It focuses on assessing the vessel’s condition and determining its fair market value. The surveyor provides an estimate of the vessel’s value based on its condition and market factors.
  3. Appraisal Survey: An appraisal survey is similar to a C&V survey and is typically requested by boat owners who want to understand the current market value of their vessel for various reasons, such as selling, refinancing, or estate planning.
  4. Insurance Survey: Insurance companies may require periodic surveys to assess the vessel’s condition and confirm that it meets safety standards. This type of survey is often required for boats of a certain age or type to maintain insurance coverage.
  5. Damage Survey: In the event of an accident, grounding, or other damage, a marine surveyor may conduct a damage survey to assess the extent of the damage, estimate repair costs, and determine if the vessel is safe to use or needs repairs.
  6. Ultrasonic Thickness Measurement (UTM): This is a specialized survey technique that measures the thickness of a vessel’s hull and other metal components. It helps assess corrosion and metal degradation, particularly in steel or aluminum boats.
  7. Sea Trial: Some surveys may include a sea trial, during which the vessel is taken out on the water to assess its performance, handling, and the functionality of its systems under real-world conditions.

Marine surveyors are typically certified or accredited professionals with expertise in marine engineering, naval architecture, or a related field. Their reports provide valuable information for boat buyers, sellers, insurers, and lenders, ensuring the safety and value of the vessel in question. Hiring a reputable marine surveyor is an essential step in the boat-buying process and for maintaining the seaworthiness of a vessel.
